Pentecost
Dear Friends,
“How is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language?”Across the street from All Saints there is a language school. People come to it from many countries to learn English, now the world's common tongue, in the way that Greek – the language of the New Testament - was then. Those who heard, each in their own language, were pilgrims in Jerusalem for the feast of Pentecost.Ours is a city to which people come from an ever greater spread of nations. Some come to study, many as tourists, others to work, some to make their homes here. This is not a new phenomenon. Last week, I was in Wales to baptise a great niece. The service was bilingual: English and Welsh. Just over a century ago, services were conducted in Welsh at All Saints, for those who had come to our city from Welsh-speaking areas. A small Welsh-speaking Baptist congregation still worships in Eastcastle Street. It plays host to a larger and younger Korean group in the afternoons. The Welsh language has undergone something of a revival in recent years, after a long period in which it seemed doomed by the onward march of English. The challenge which the coming among us of people of so many languages and cultures presents to us is one of communicating the faith to them. At the same time, we must seek to keep alive that which is of enduring value in our own religious culture; not because it is English, as if the Church of England was the spiritual arm of an English nationalism, but because it speaks the truth to us about Jesus Christ.Happy Pentecost! Dear Friends,
A paper was given to me a few days ago. It had been written by the Bishop of Sheffield after he had been a fraternal delegate at a Synod of Bishops in Rome on evangelisation.
From its deliberations and discussions with others, the bishop has distilled seven disciplines and practices which help to grow the Church.
The first of these, suggested to him by our own bishop, is "prayerful discernment and listening or contemplation."
In the Gospel on Ascension Day, Jesus speaks to the apostles of the mission to all nations, but tells them that they are to remain in the city until they "have been clothed with power from on high."
Then in Acts we read of them being together in prayer with Mary and the women until Pentecost.
The nine days between Ascension and Pentecost are kept as a season (a novena) of prayer for the gifts of the Holy Spirit. These days are a reminder of the priority of prayer in the Church's mission. This is something we are reminded of again in Sunday's Gospel which is part of the "high priestly prayer" in John (17: 20 - 26) in which he prays for those who "will believe in me through their word."
Prayer has always been at the heart of the life of All Saints. But the bishop's paper suggests that we give thought to how we might focus our prayer on discerning mission opportunities in a city where the nations of the world have come to us.
Lack of space means that discussion of the other disciplines and practices will have to wait. In the meantime we will, like those first disciples be "continually in the temple blessing God."
Yours in Christ,
Fr. Alan Moses

Dear Friends,
The three days leading up to Ascension Day in this coming week are called Rogation Days: from the Latin "to ask."
Traditionally, they are days of prayer for blessing on the harvest of land and sea.
A church set in a city centre, whose courtyard is one of the few green spaces, like the lives of most city-dwellers, can seem very detached from the people who produce our food and the processes by which it comes to us.
The recent horsemeat scandal has revealed a dark side to the way food is provided.
In these days, we also pray for business and commerce. Our parish has long been a centre of the "rag trade" - now called the "fashion industry." The London Fashion Centre is in Eastcastle Street.
The recent tragedy in Bangladesh in which hundreds of clothing workers died reminds us sharply of the human cost of the low-priced garments on sale in many of the Oxford Street shops.
This Sunday, we hear of the conversion of Lydia, a dealer in purple goods: the luxury end of the fashion trade then; more Bond Street than Oxford Street.
We should pray for the conversion of food and fashion industries to decent and fair practices. But can we do that without praying for our own conversion to "fair trade" in these areas of life?

- The memoirs of the Rt Revd Ambrose W.M. Weekes CB, QHC, FKC, AKC, RN. Posted Thursday 7th February 2013 AN INTERESTING LIFE This book, published by Sampson Low Ltd contains Ambrose’s own account of his ‘Most interesting life’. Written largely during his retirement he was never able to produce a document complete and ready for publication but his niece, Mary Snape (daughter of Isabel, Ambrose’s sister) has transcribed and edited Ambrose’s handwritten account and discovered a fascinating insight into a distinguished and fulfilling career both in the Navy, first as a Naval Chaplain rising to be Chaplain of the Fleet and subsequently in the Anglican Diocese of Europe, becoming in due course Dean of Gibraltar and Suffragan Bishop of Europe. Ambrose, born and brought up on the Island of Sheppey, Kent, went on to be educated at Rochester Choir School and the Joseph Williamson Mathematical School before Theological Training at Kings College London and Lincoln Theological College, Ordination at Rochester Cathedral and a Curacy at St Luke’s Gillingham. He then joined the Navy as Chaplain in 1944 and there followed a long and remarkable career in the Navy. He served all over the world including time in the Far East, two spells with the Royal Marine Commandos (having earned his ‘green beret’ at Bickleigh) , in Egypt during the Suez crisis and later in Indonesia. However, perhaps his enduring interest was with the training of young entrants to the Service and he had three spells at HMS Ganges which he described as both fulfilling and enjoyable. Becoming Chaplain of the Fleet he described as an honour and he took on this challenge with enthusiasm and humour. In fact humour comes through in every aspect of his career, that and the enjoyment of living and entertaining. He was able to make contact with all from Rating to Senior Officers, a rare talent. In Europe he served in Tangier, Gibraltar (as Dean) was consecrated Bishop at Greenwich, and spent the following years visiting countries in the Diocese from France, through Italy and as far away as Russia. He didn’t even stay still in retirement because he went from Rochester back to Europe at Territet, Switzerland before finally hanging up his Bishop’s Crook. Ambrose writes with a refreshing and humorous outlook, not afraid to laugh at himself from time to time and always giving a sharp and telling description of his experiences whether as a Junior Chaplain or as a respected and Senior Churchman. The Rt Revd Dr Geoffrey Rowell, Bishop of Gibraltar in Europe has kindly written a Foreword to this book, which will be available from early February 2013. It should be of interest to those who have known Ambrose in whatever context, to those interested in an insider’s view of the Navy and its workings and to anyone wishing to learn about the Diocese in Europe from one who has worked there. Good quality A4 Paperback. Price £24.00 +P&P. Order forms available from The Parish Office at ALL SAINTS or in CHURCH
